Atonement…Extraordinary Style

Keira Knightly wearing Jacqueline Durran designed Green Dress

Having recently seen that Keira Knightly is staring in that new Jack Ryan movie, I decided to have a think back to previous roles. Alongside Pride and Prejudice, my favourite movie she appears in has to be Atonement. When considering this movie, I don’t automatically think of the heartbreaking love story, beautiful settings and ridiculous role of Benedict Cumberbatch as a peadophile, I was absolutely mesmerised by the amazing costume design.

I remember the issue of Grazia that featured the original sketches and designs of the costumes by Jacqueline Durran, especially the green dress, and knowing then, that I wanted to someday design something equally as beautiful.

Heres a few more of my favourites from the film.

Victoria Beckham….the Love of my Life

Victoria Beckham at her Autumn/ Winter 2014 Show

Yet again this woman makes me crumble at her feet.

Victoria Beckham is an absolute genius and her recent New York Show cements this fact to the absolute core. She has really adapted from the original figure hugging, waist clenching power dresses, which first brought her onto the scene 5 years ago.

This season sees sleeveless coats, tailored mannish trousers under long floaty skirts and, of course, her signature structured handbags.  I am loving these side chained coats, especially the sleeveless white one (See above) As always, we see a lot of colour blocking in this range, but unlike most autumn/winter collections, this collection is brighter.

It’s so refreshing to see her throwing away the waist clenching dresses, and go for more fun, drop waisted, oversized shapes. I am also loving this blue injection; When thinking of autumn, you automatically think purples, greens, browns etc.  It’s amazing seeing royal blue standing out so prominently with such a respected and influential designer.

Another notable detail of the range are the beautiful midi skirts. This trend has really taken off over the last year and VB steps it up a notch with the visible slits towards the front of hers. This gives a nod towards the Cullottes trend thats coming on strong.

I love everything about this collection, this woman and what she’s doing. I am forever in awe of how far she has come and how much she’s achieved herself. My inspiration forever..

A Key Autumn 2013 Essential..

“Fashion is a kind of communication. It’s a language without words. A great hat speaks for itself.”

On getting dressed this morning, I looked in the mirror and thought “A good hat would 100% complete this outfit”

Coral Jumper – (Selected Femme) , Skirt – Vintage (Sorry!)

I’ve always loved fedoras and a good trilby but never actually invested in one. More so because I never properly took the time to do a bit of research to find a good reasonably priced one. I did come to the conclusion that it is something that is going to serve a long time so I wouldn’t mind spend a bit of cash on it.

So I have compiled a shortlist of hats that i think would add a bit of oomph to any Autumn outfit.

Another amazing Campaign from FCUK..

What an awesome new campaign from the design house FCUK!

‘From Sketch to Store’ is the new AW 13 campaign, shot by Rankin and illustrated/designs by Jo Bird, which continues the theme of edgy and alternative advertising. It’s all a very simple concept with Rankin shooting 3 models in their natural form (Starkers!…fair play.) and then Jo Bird used the original shots to sketch on the new designs. It’s simple, elegant and edgy..

Known for their effortless style and sartorial designs the sketches are of clean cut, MOD jackets and blouses.

This wasn’t entirely all FCUK however..

Rankin is part of an agency called The Full Service who French Connection approached to materialise the idea.

..and what a great job they did. Its an interesting concept that will have everyone turning their heads which is just what FCUK wanted. I’m absolutely loving this and hope that they get a lot of recognition for it!

Heres the rest!

All of a sudden…Tulle Everywhere!

Is it just me or is the Tutu making a comeback? Every media outlet I turn to is crunching out all shapes, sizes and colours of beautifully ruffled tulle skirts……AND I LOVE IT!

I first starting seeing these skirts showing up on Pinterest when I was gathering ideas on what style to make for my graduation dress. (Yeah…that didn’t happen..) But ever since, I can’t stop looking at them, they’re just so dreamy. And I’m not the only girl who immediate thinks of Miss Bradshaw when I hear the word tutu either..

And why the hell not? Okay you don’t have to go full Tutu…you can get them in all different subtle lengths and colours too! It’s definitely been added to my list of garments to roll out over the next few months. Just so pretty!

Forever Balmain..

Balmain is one of those brands that bubbles a little under the radar but every now and again, a celebrity pops up wearing something truly beautiful and were reminded just how wonderful this brand is!

I am of course talking about Kate Bosworth rocking up to the Met Gala 2013 sporting their Pink embellished ‘Top’ from their Fall 2013 collection. Superbly teamed with a gold belt and simple Salvatore Ferragamo black stilettos, the stunning Top/Dress did all the talking. And this is the case with most of Balmain’s collections.

Looking back over the years, their collections boast Big shoulders, awesome embellishment and just outright Shouty colours and fabrics! They just know exactly how to make an outfit stand out.

Although this design house is french their 2013 collections have been quite asian inspired, with wrap over jackets and embellished tunics. The great thing about it is you need little accessorising with these power players. Minimal jewellery and a soft hued heel is all that is required to look truly beautiful.

Zoe Saldana is clearly a big fan of Olivier Rousteing’s work as she has been seen at countless red carpet events wearing his designs and working them fabulously.

However, they aren’t all about the ‘in your face’ bold and bright… they know a thing or two about tailoring and masculine edge.

Here’s a few outfits I’ve come across over the years that have always stuck with me.

H&M’s new baby… & Other Stories..

Recently, I’ve had to bury my head in a mountain of books and papers, and knuckle down to complete an exam. We all know that this simply not true…endless days were spent procrastinating online and in magazines. One good thing that came out of it was my ever growing love for the new brand launched under the H&M group – & Other Stories.

Primarily based in Europe…(well they have a store in London..) they have created a brand that’s slightly more expensive than H&M, but provides exquisite shapes and colours that will suit just about everyone.

They have a great range of products from shirts, shoes and bags to underwear, makeup and swimwear. I love that they have stuck to their european style with a lot of delicate materials in subdued tones but have also created a lot of timeless bold prints and key pieces. They’re definitely a brand to dable in to keep your look fresh and perfect for the subtle on-trend accessory. They are going to be a brand that I will be investing in…Here are a few pieces i adore!

(this is the picture that stole my heart…I’ve always been a great fan of the printed pants and blazer and when I seen this in Grazia it was genuinely inspiring..)

(I’m going through a bit of an Emerald green obsession at the minute so when I saw this I immediately knew this brand was the one..)

(These are ticking those metallic box and two-tone boxes whilst encouraging my need to stray away from the ballet pump rut and stick to brogues and more structured shoes…)

(There’s no better way to brighten up your outfit than a good colour pop with your handbag, be it a clutch or a good daytime tote… I love the neon trimming!)

(I love the simplicity of their underwear too….I’m a sucker for a good matching set and when I seen the price for these beauties I was so happy! )

Have a look at their Tumblr and give them a like on Facebook…they’re great for uploading pictures of what they’re getting up to!

Enjoy! Amz x

Selected?…ALL OF IT

Working for Avoca has given me the opportunity to get to know different brands of clothing that they sell throughout their stores in Ireland. One brand that constantly delivers beautiful and on trend items is SELECTED.

Selected is a Danish family owned brand which has been running for at least 25 years. They cater for both men and women, originally starting as a menswear brand. They focus on keeping their garments current and sophisticated.

Their menswear line is created for the modern man, its all very contemporary and focuses on fitted shirts and suits. I love a well dressed man as much as the next girl so I have been spreading the word to my male friends and family.

When all the knitwear for winter came in majority of my colleagues and myself all wanted the jumpers for ourselves let alone buy them for relatives. I have to say the mens stuff if very simple and minimal but thats what’s great about it, you can forever mix and match and now have to worry about clashes etc.

The great thing about the womenswear side of the company is that its split into two departments; Selected Femme and Selected Femme Jeans.  Selected Femme focuses on feminine cuts and sharp tailoring in delicate colours.

Selected Femme Jeans follows a more edgy, rock ‘n’ roll vibe! It uses more washed out and worn looks to give an urban look. It definitely uses more vibrant patterned fabrics and denim in this range and caters to the more laidback and louder customer. (ME!)

The only downside to this company is that they don’t deliver to Northern Ireland or Scotland.. so if you can find a retailer that stocks their stuff…snap it up! Or else use your english friends as a courier business?? Check out the collections below:

Kenzo … Bold Prints Galore!

So on my hunt through the tonnes of shows at this years Paris Fashion Week, there was one show that really caught my eye. As a lover of statement pieces and bold prints, I was completely blown away at Kenzo’s wonderful collection. I felt like I was transformed to an african tribe surrounded by fierce animals. The pieces were beautifully crafted from billowing maxi dresses to sharp tailored jacket/trouser combos, with the accompaniment of earthy khaki colours to inspire everyday wear. And the shoes!! The shoes to complete the pieces were so beautiful and perfectly matchy-matchy to each print that I wanted them in every colour and style… truly inspirational and Genius!

Vlieger and Vandam

I stumbled across this brand by chance and fell in love immediately with their quirky idea. They are a danish duo that emboss items such as handguns and handcuffs onto their beautiful bags. I love them because they will add a little fun to an outfit with their great range of colours and styles, from totes to clutches (And it also says, yeah I’m a badass and don’t care that it looks like I’m promoting gun crime )

Go on….have a wee look for yourself!! Their new crucifix collection is amazing.
